Mr. Eero, a 3-year-old gelding by Conway Hall, showed that he might have the step to go with the big boys when he won a Kentucky Sire Stakes final in 1:54.4 Saturday night (Sept. 13).

With Mark O'Mara driving for trainer Gary Bourgon, Mr. Eero took control of the race just before the half and then held off the late charge of the pocket-sitting Valiant Chip, a Pine Chip colt driven by Sonny Patterson Jr. The time of the race was a new lifetime mark for Mr. Eero.

When asked if he thought Mr. Eero could compete with the top 3-year-old colts, O'Mara said, "They'd have to think about it now. He looks pretty good on paper, and horses get braver when they win like he has."

Dexter Cup winner CR V Eight was never in the hunt and finished well back.

Mr. Eero now sports five win in eight starts this season for owner-breeder Erkki Laakkonen.
