Higher And Higher and Mud Pie Hanover won the two divisions of the second leg of the Cape & Cutter Series at the Meadowlands Friday night, with Higher And Higher an expected winner and Mud Pie Hanover a huge surprise, paying $121.60 for a $2 win ticket.
Higher And Higher started trainer-driver Daryl Bier's night off well as she cruised to a one-length victory in 1:53.1. The 5-year-old mare by Western Terror picked up her fourth victory in as many starts this season for Bier and his partners Charles Dombeck and Glenn Del Russo.
Mud Pie Hanover, with Dan Dube driving for Jason Robinson, enjoyed a two-hole trip while Ginger And Fred cut the pace but couldn't find the speed and stamina to reach the wire first. Mud Pie Hanover popped out in the stretch drive while the Ron Burke-trained Ginger And Fred faded to fourth in the 1:51.4 mile.
Mud Pie Hanover, a 6-year-old mare by Allamerican Native, is owned by Robert Main of McDonald, Pa., near The Meadows. The mare had won the fillies and mares Preferred class at The Meadows in 1:52.3 before shipping to the Meadowlands for the Cape & Cutter Series.
The Burke Stable's Rock N Soul was the runner-up to Higher And Higher in the first division while Symphony In Motion was third. Royal Cee Cee N took second behind Mud Pie Hanover with Go On BB--another member of the Burke Stable--third.
