The third session of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale got underway on a beautiful warm fall night, but again, due to the covid-19 pandemic, attendance was light. A total of 180 horses were sold for an average price of $36,094, down from the average of $44,254 posted in the comparable session in 2019. The average dropped by 18.4 percent, which put the entire sale down 17.9 percent for 479 horses sold.
Horses with pedigrees with production and good physical makeup continued to sell well, albeit maybe some at a slight discount from the 2019 sale, when prices overall climbed.
The top price in the third session was $172,000 for Hip 477, a Muscle Hill colt out of Kinda Crazy Lindy, the dam of Kinda Lucky Lindy 2, 1:58.1f; 3, 1:54.2f; 4, 1:54.1f; BT1:52.4-'20. New York owner Ken Jacobs, who was not in attendance, had the final bid.
Trainer Marcus Melander bought Hip 392, a Walner colt, for $160,000 for his client Courant Ab. The colt named Play Fiercely is the second foal of Womans Will 2, 1:54.2f; 3, 1:54.1f; BT1:53.2 ($602,991), with the maternal line going back to Conch, the dam of European racing star and top sire Viking Kronos.
A total of 10 horses brought prices of $100,000 or more in the third session.
