My Little Dragon became the fastest female pacer in history with a 1:48.1 victory in Friday night\'s $46,500 Open for fillies and mares at the Meadowlands. The time bested the previous mark shared by Loyal Opposition, Carolina Sunshine and Frightening P by three-fifths of a second.
My Little Dragon\'s world-record effort didn\'t come without some help from peer Benear, who set wicked fractions on the front end. As driver Ron Pierce sat third with My Little Dragon, Cat Manzi sent Benear to the lead, opening up a four-length margin by the opening :25.1 quarter. Benear kept right on going to a :53.1 half and 1:20.4 three-quarters, and it was there that Pierce tipped My Little Dragon out and toward the front.
The 2-1 second choice in the six-mare field, My Little Dragon outclosed 6-5 favored Free and driver David Miller to win by a neck. Benear was able to hold onto third.
A two-time Breeders Crown champion, My Little Dragon was the 2005 Two-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the year. The daughter of Dragon Again is trained by Noel Daley for owner Adam Victor & Son Stable. Her career earnings now top $1.44 million.
