Mystician cleared to the lead for driver Tim Tetrick at the half and never looked back to capture the OSS Gold final for 2-year-old pacing colts in 1:52 Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack.
Royal Will (Mario Baillargeon) was quickest off the gate from post nine and took command of his nine rivals clearing to the lead in :27.2. Just as Royal Will took over command Mach It Big (Yannick Gingras) pocket-pulled and re-took the lead.
Mach It Big did not have the lead very long as the $1 million Metro Stakes winner from earlier this year, Mystician took command before the half in :56.2. The son of Camluck received little threat going into the far turn as he took his rivals past the final quarter station in 1:23.3.
Down the stretch, Tetrick opened up with the Jeff Gillis trainee and was victorious over Some Mach Some Win with longshot Bullet Speed coming on to finish third.
"I talked to the trainer (Jeff Gillis) and I talked to Jody (Jamieson) and they said he was better off a helmet. When the gate left no one was really getting out of there so I just had to make my move," Tetrick commented in the winner's circle.
"He was by himself too long and Jody (Jamieson) said he would do that. I didn't want to make it a big spring late but he got the money and he's a very nice colt. The track is really good and this is a nice colt, good horses find races to win and this colt did."
Mystician now has freshman earnings of $771,070 for Gillis and co-owners Gerald Stay, Ken Henwood and Mac Nichol. He paid $3.70 for the win. (WEG)
