Pat Matters shattered the Dover Downs track record for older trotting mares with a 1:51.2 victory in Tuesday night’s (Jan. 5) $20,000 Open Handicap Trot.

Pat Matters and driver Andy McCarthy left alertly from post six and took the field through a quick :26.2 opening quarter before Warrior One motored up to seize the lead from Pat Matters before a :55 half. At the five-eighths, Pat Matters boldly pulled the pocket to reclaim the lead from a laboring Warrior One, but faced an immediate challenge from Jack Vernon nearing three-quarters in 1:23.

At the top of the stretch, Jack Vernon and 7-5 favorite Scirocco Rob closed stoutly, but neither could make up enough ground to threaten Pat Matters. The 6-year-old Explosive Matter mare reached down for more trot and won by a half length over Jack Vernon (Corey Callahan) and Scirocco Rob (Tim Tetrick).

Pat Matters races for the Patricia Stable and is trained by Richard “Nifty” Norman. Her 1:51.2 mile eclipsed the previous 1:53 track record for older trotting mares, taken by Buck I St Pat in 2008.

Owners George and Tina Dennis, trainer Joe Columbo and driver Mike Cole combined for four winners on the card.

Live racing at Dover Downs continues Wednesday (Jan. 6) at 4:30 p.m. Recently retired world champion Shartin N will lead the post parade for the featured Mares Open Pace, carded as race 11. (Dover)
