Aperfectyankee and owner/trainer/driver Jim Oscarsson upset the field in the $387,250 Peter Haughton Memorial for freshman colt trotters Saturday at the Meadowlands, falling one-fifth of a second shy of the stakes record with a 1:54.1 performance. Sent off at 4-1, the Yankee Glide colt held off Corky and David Miller. Fashion Blizzard closed late for third.

When the gate folded, Oscarsson sent Aperfectyankee to the front from post four, trotting to the quarter in :28.2. Brian Sears would send favored Major Athens to the lead from third, but he didn’t get there easily as Oscarsson stung the colt racing up the backside. Sitting in the pocket through fractions of :56.2 and 1:24.3 the duo was poised to strike in the stretch.

In the lane, Aperfectyankee took the lead from Major Athens and held a game Corky at bay trotting to the wire. Making his fourth start for Oscarsson, Aperfectyankee won for the second time. He finished fourth in his Haughton elimination behind Major Athens, Corky and My Man Can. Bred by Robert Detweiler, Aperfectyankee knocked more than two full seconds off his lifetime best. The freshman now possesses earnings of $218,201.
