Personal Style, 55-1, upsets in Hambo Oaks

When Check Me Out and Maven, the top two contenders in the $714,050 Hambletonian Oaks, made breaks racing out of the final turn, the 87th edition of the race for sophomore filly trotters was thrown up for grabs. In a wild finish, Personal Style, sent off at odds of 55-1, wore down Win Missy B late in the lane to win in 1:53.1. The win was the first in the Oaks for driver David Miller.
"I was just as surprised as everybody else,” Miller said afterward. "When I saw Tim’s filly take off running I was shocked. Next thing I know Maven was running too. I was totally surprised by that.”
Win Missy B fired to the lead from post seven when the gate folded, taking the field to the quarter in :28. Favorite Check Me Out soon moved from second to take the lead with Maven racing on the outside in third. Tim Tetrick and Check Me Out clicked off a :55 half and were on their way to reaching three quarters (1:23.2) when the Donato Hanover filly made an uncharacteristic break. The miscue triggered a break by Maven, and the race was on for the rest of the field.
Turning for home, Win Missy B held the lead as Personal Style began her assault on the outside. Miller and his Yankee Glide filly closed the distance to the leader and passed Win Missy B and Brian Sears late in the mile. Check Me Out and Tetrick recovered to finish third, but were disqualified and placed eighth for interference with Maven while on a break. Sassy Syrinx was elevated to third.
Personal Style was bred by Kentuckiana Farms General Partnership and owned by Brittany Farms and Melvin Hartman. The filly is trained by Richard "Nifty” Norman. The victory was the fifth of her career, pushing her career bankroll to $558,638. The winning time was one-fifth of a second off the stakes record. Personal Style returned $116.40, $36.40 and $18.80 in the win.
