The highly regarded 3-year-old colt trotter Photo Color will be making his first start of 2004 Tuesday night (July 13) at Balmoral Park, just 18 days before the Hambletonian elims at the Meadowlands, but trainer Erv Miller says he hasn’t completely closed the door on starting his colt in the upcoming trotting classic.

“Very lightly, Miller told The Horseman when asked if a Hambo start was still possible for Photo Color. “He’d have to race awful good a couple starts for me to go there.

Although Photo Color won just once last year at two in only three starts, the effort was impressive enough that he was considered one of the early top divisional contenders. That lone win was a 1:56.2 effort in a Campbellville division at Mohawk last September.

Miller said that Photo Color “was slow coming around this year and he was “just making sure he was all right. With his brother Andy driving, Photo Color won a qualifier at Balmoral Park June 30 in 2:00.4 and then followed that up with a winning 1:58.4 qualifying effort over the same one-mile oval on July 7.

Photo Color is listed as the 5-2 morning line choice in tonight’s eighth race at Balmoral, a conditioned trot. A son of SJ’s Photo, Photo Color is owned by Ervin Miller Stables, James Geis, Ron Michelon and David J. Miller.
