Pierce wins 8,000th career race

Hall of Fame driver Ron Pierce won his 8,000th career race Sunday night, reaching the milestone with the 3-year-old filly pacer Fouralarmfire in the 12th race at Dover Downs. The 55-year-old Pierce is just the 20th driver to reach 8,000 victories.
Pierce began Sunday three away from 8,000, and was shut out in four starts on the afternoon card at Harrah’s Chester. Making the trip then to Dover, Pierce won 7,998 with Cedar Dover in the Matron 3FT elim and then 7,999 with Alsace Hanover in a Progress Pace elim before scoring with Fouralarmfire.
This is Pierce’s busiest year ever in the sulky as he currently has sat in the sulky a personal-high of 2,753 times in 2011. His 482 victories on the year are just 28 shy of his career-best 456 races won in 2006. Pierce’s purse earnings of $180,526,640 are third all-time behind only John Campbell and Mike Lachance.
Set to soon join Pierce in the 8,000-win club is Wally Hennessey, whose 215 victories this year give him 7,952 for his career.
