Podges Lady (inside) rallied up the passing lane to edge the heavily-favored Destiny's Chance in Saturday night's $86,000 Courageous Lady for 3-year-old filly pacers at Northfield Park. Driven by Ryan Stahl, Podges Lady sat second behind the Dave Palone-driven Destiny's Chance through the first three quarters but then was able to rush up the inside and put her head in front at the wire in 1:54.2.
Sent off at odds of 2-5, Destiny's Chance made the front easily from post two as the 5-1 second-choice Podges Lady, who started from post one, settled in second. Destiny's Chance reached the quarter in :27.4 and then the half in :57.1. At that point an outer flow had developed, led by the first-over Princess Cruiser and driver Kayne Kauffman.
As the outer flow stalled on the outside through the 1:25.3 three-quarters clocking, Destiny's Chance turned for home still with the lead. But Stahl ducked Podges Lady inside and with some urging she was finally able to edge past right at the wire. Princess Cruiser held for third.
"Being from Ohio, I've won several Ohio Sires Stakes Finals, but this win ranks right up there with the best of them, " said Stahl. "When we came to the passing lane she really responded."
The win for Podges Lady was her first since last July 23. The daughter of The Panderosa won the first three starts of her career, including a career-best 1:52.1f in her last score in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes contest at The Meadows, but then came up short the final 10 starts of her freshman season.
The Joe Seekman trainee came into the Courageous Lady off three qualifying efforts at Balmoral Park. A $30,000 yearling purchase of Sawgrass Farms from breeder Four Starzzzz Stable, Podges Lady increased her career earnings to $257,728 with the victory.
