Broad Bahn won last year's Hambletonian after starting from post one and this year it will be Uncle Peter trying to duplicate that effort as he will start from the inside spot in Saturday's $1.5 million renewal of the trotting classic at the Meadowlands. Post positions were drawn Tuesday afternoon in the Pegasus dining room at the Big M.
Installed the 5-2 morning-line choice, Uncle Peter won his Hambo elimination last weekend in 1:53.3, the slowest of the three elims. Knows Nothing won his elim in 1:53.1, while Market Share captured his split in 1:52.2. By virtue of those victories, the connections earned the right to choose their post for the rich final.
Trainer Jeff Gillis picked first for Knows Nothing and he selected post four for the 7-2 second choice. "This gives Jody (driver Jody Jamieson) a lot of options,” Gillis explained.
Jamieson later added, "This colt has just done everything we've asked of him. He is like a pacer, he has that much speed when you come off a helmet.”
Driver Tim Tetrick then chose post two for Market Share, who was installed the 4-1 third choice. "He's handy on both ends of the mile,” said Tetrick. "Last week he showed speed early and late.
"I've always dreamed of winning the Hambletonian, hopefully this is my year,” he added.
It was then trainer Jimmy Takter's turn to pick a post for Uncle Peter, whose win in the Hambo elimination was his third straight victory. After some hesitation, Takter went with the inside starting spot that besides Broad Bahn was also successful for the 2009 winner Muscle Hill and the 2008 winner Deweycheatumnhowe.
