The late Sam McKee was known as one of the sport’s best race callers. It was appropriate that McKee’s namesake, Real Cool Sam, turned in a world record-equaling performance in the $324,550 Peter Haughton Memorial for two-year-old colt trotters, sponsored by the Walner Syndicate. The Muscle Hill-Cooler Schooner gelding raised his record to five wins in as many starts Saturday, August 3, trotting to a 1:53.1 triumph for breeder and owner Fashion Farms LLC.

Miller opted to stay off the lead when the gate folded. Instead, it was Rome Pays Off that would leave from post seven, reaching the top before being shuffled with early action from Back Of The Neck and Synergy, which would take control and lead the field to the half in :56.2. Expectations and Brian Sears led the outer flow with Miller and Real Cool Sam trotting second over as the freshman trotters raced through the turn (1:25.2). In the stretch, the gelding dashed away from the field, scoring a decisive victory for trainer Jim Campbell. Rome Pays off trotted second with Expectations finishing third.

The winning time eclipsed the track record for two-year-old geldings, set by Pinkman in 2014. The time also equaled the world record set by Outburst at Lexington in 2013. Real Cool Sam added $162,275 to his bankroll, which now stands at $225,111. The gelding returned $3.00, $2.60 and $2.20.
