Round up the usual suspects. A peek at the standings after the third of five preliminary rounds of Yonkers Raceway's ongoing series for free-for-all pacers shows the standouts standing out. Points for both series are divvied up the same way as purses, as in 50 for a win, 25 for second, 12 for third, eight for fourth and five for fifth. Each starter also earns a 25-point "appearance fee" just for showing up.
As compiled by tally master Bob Miecuna of the Yonkers race office, the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series finds defending series champ Real Nice matched on the leaderboard with Atochia, each with three wins in as many series starts for 225 points. Triple-millionaire and 2009 and '10 series champ Foiled Again--fresh off his 60th career victory Saturday night--shares third with the in-form Art Z. Both have two wins and a second for 200 points.
Nob Hill High (162 points), Reibercrombie (150), Sea Venture (150) and Flipper J (149) complete the "as-of-now" eight on the gate for the final.
The leading ladies of the Blue Chip Matchmaker are See You at Peelers (212½ points), whose 3-for-3 series record including a first-round dead-heat, Western Silk (200), Chancey Lady (187½, also with a "heater" in her column), Anndrovette (187), Rocklamation (175), Fox Valley Sage (162), Ginger and Fred (158) and P Note Blue Chip (155).
Note that a trainer may only have two starters in any one of the finals, which are scheduled for Saturday night, Apr. 28, and feature purses of $455,000 (Levy) and $297,000 (Matchmaker), respectively.
