Rita J paced to a new track record for her age and gait after Stephane Bouchard guided her to a one length, 1:54:3 victory in their $41,686 NYSS split at Monticello Raceway Sunday, July 16. That clocking erased the former standard of 1:55:4 which was set by I’m Yours in 1999.

The daughter of Bettor’s Delight, who was among the top freshman fillies in the Sire Stakes last season with six wins in nine starts, scored her first victory of the 2006 campaign for her elated owner, Ken Jacobs.

“I knew this filly was better than she had been racing and I told Stephane to keep her rolling and he did just what I told him,” Jacobs said. “We also changed her shoes and went from steel to aluminum which she seemed to like better. I real thrilled and now we’ll try her in the Tarport Hap on Friday at the Meadowlands.”

But Jacobs wasn’t the only owner aiming their New York-bred filly toward the Tarport Hap.

Joe Parisi of White Birch Farm had exactly the same idea when he entered Darlin’s Delight. This world class daughter of Bettor’s Delight, who came into the race off three consecutive victories which including a world record 1:50:1 romp in the Lynch Memorial at Pocono June 17, won her division in a laugher and her clocking of 2:00:1 was the slowest of the seven NYSS splits that day.

Regular teamster Yannick Gingras was again at the controls behind Darlin’s Delight and he waited until the quarter pole to take her to the front. They cruised through fractions of :29:4; 1:00:4 and 1:31:2 and understandably no one dared to venture first–up against the 1-9 betting favorite in the early going.

Gingras kept the brakes on until the top of the lane and where he finally gave Darlin’s Delight her head and she opened up three lengths on Princess Alysha (Stephane Bouchard).

Yannick Gingras entered the winner’s circle almost sheepishly and said, “We didn’t want to go any faster than we had to because she’s in the Tarport Hap on Friday.”

Darlin\'s Delight is also eligible to the $350,000 Mistletoe Shalee, set for Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands.
