Royalty For Life, under wraps in the stretch, easily won the $70,000 first elimination of the $1.2 million Hambletonian Saturday at the Meadowlands. Driven by Brian Sears, the RC Royalty colt commanded from the onset, beating seven other colts in a time of 1:52. Smilin Eli, third throughout the mile, crossed the wire second, with High Bridge third. E L Rocket finished fourth. Yonkers Trot winner Deweycolorintheline did not advance to the final.

Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, the victory was the third in six starts for Royalty For Life. The Stanley Dancer Memorial winner is trained by George Ducharme for owners Alfred Ross, Raymond Campbell Jr. and Paul Fontaine. Ross bred the colt, now a winner of more than $500,000 lifetime.
