The New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NJTHA), which recently leased Monmouth Park from the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, announced on Thursday (March 8) that it plans to hold Thoroughbred racing at the Meadowlands. Jeff Gural, who leases the Meadowlands from the NJSEA, told harnessracing.com he has a verbal agreement with the NJTHA, but details have not yet been finalized.
The NJTHA said it is waiting for the New Jersey Racing Commission to approve its request for dates for Thoroughbred racing at the Meadowlands, which Gural has previously stated will take place on the turf course. The NJTHA said it plans to hold races at the Meadowlands May 4 and 5--the weekend of the Kentucky Derby--and then on Fridays and Saturdays from Oct. 12 through Nov. 3. Thoroughbreds have not raced at the Meadowlands since 2009.
