Scarlet Knight, the 2001 Hambletonian champion, won his first race of the 2004 racing season on Wednesday night (March 31) at the Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden. The 6-year-old son of Pine Chip covered the one-mile distance in 1:54.2.

"I don't believe there could be a better trotter than this right now," said Scarlet Knight's trainer-driver, Stefan Melander, immediately after the race.

Melander, who also shares ownership of Scarlet Knight, is hoping to win the famed Elitlopp, which will be held at Solvalla on May 30.

Scarlet Knight left the gate comfortably in his season's debut and then Melander took the lead with his charge not far past the first-quarter marker. From there they carved out steady quarters before hitting the wire about two lengths the best.

Scarlet Knight has already been breeding mares this year as well and recently his first foal was born.
