Schilling claims in Chicago

June 13, 2004

Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling claimed the 9-year-old New Zealand bred gelding Thunder Storm N for $45,000 on Saturday night (June 12) at Balmoral Park..

The 37-year-old Schilling sports an 8-3 record for Boston this year and 171 career victories. He signed with the Red Sox as a free agent this year after playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also previously pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Thunder Storm N will be trained by John Podres, the son of Schilling's pitching coach during his years with the Phillies. The elder Podres and Schilling have remained good friends and with a little prodding from his former coach the 6'5" right-hander decided just recently to get involved in harness racing.

The U.S. Trotting Association shows this being the second Standardbred owned by Schilling. According to their records, last February he purchased the 9-year-old On The Road Again pacer Gimme Three Steps, who hadn't raced since 2001. Schilling then sold the horse the following month.
