Series finals set for Meadowlands

February 21, 2008

« Return to News
Six winter series finals and one lengthy winning streak top the first big stakes weekend of the 2008 harness meet at the Meadowlands, with the $88,700 Cape & Cutter for older pacing mares headlining the Friday night card.
Stylish Solution, whose 13-race streak was snapped last week by My Little Dragon, is the 9-5 morning line favorite in the Cape & Cutter. She will try to avenge that loss from post one [head number two] with Brian Sears in the sulky. One of two entrants in the race trained by Nat Varty, Stylish Solution has won 15 of 38 starts and $204,637. She is
owned by Arthur and Scott Rudolph.
The Noel Daley-trained entry of My Little Dragon and Little Miss Dragon is the 3-1 second choice. My Little Dragon held off Stylish Solution for a 1:52 win in last week\'s second round of the Cape & Cutter. She will start from post 10 Friday night with Ron Pierce at the lines. Adam Victor & Son Stable\'s My Little Dragon banked more than
$1.3 million racing at ages two and three. She was voted the 2005 Two-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the Year. However, the Noel Daley trainee made just nine starts as a 4-year-old last season.
\"She was never quite right the entire year [in 2007],\" said Mike Vanderkemp, assistant trainer for the Daley Stable. \"At the end of September, she had throat surgery. She\'s come back good. She will be trained up for the final.\"

Earlier in the night, Tug River Princess will try to complete a series sweep in the $62,200 Tender Loving Care for sophomore filly pacers. She is rated the 8-5 favorite from post six. Ross Croghan trains the daughter of Badlands Hanover, while John Campbell has the
driving assignment.
Panaramic Art bids for his 20th consecutive win in the $75,700 Exit 16W, the last of the three stakes on Saturday night. The prodigious 3-year-old pacer is the 3-5 prohibitive favorite from post five [head number six]. Panaramic Art, trained by Al Meyer, is
searching for his third series crown at the Meadowlands. He swept the Oil Burner and Clyde Hirt series earlier this winter. The Iowa-bred gelding\'s streak began July 15, 2007 and has taken him to the winner\'s circle of six different mid-west fair tracks, Yonkers and the Meadowlands. He has already exceeded the $60,000 paid for him five months ago by the Squawk Box Stable and Keep The Dream Going Inc.
\"We were thinking about shutting him down for a while [before this], but he was racing so good,\" Meyer said. \"It is tough to shut them down when they are going so well.\"
The $81,500 Junior Trendsetter for 3-year-old pacers is the richest of the three events Saturday. Scape Ghost aims for the series sweep as the 8-5 favorite from post six [head number one]. Scape Ghost stamped himself the one to beat with decisive scores [1:52.4, 1:52] in the preliminary legs of the series. The son of Artiscape races for the Delaware-based partnership of Kenneth Mitchell and Rodney Mitchell Inc. He was a $24,000 yearling purchase at the 2006 New Jersey Classic Sale.
The $71,800 Aquarius features a small, but contentious field of 4-year-old open pacers. Mr Apples gamely fought off Artist\'s View to win the Aquarius prelim in wire-to-wire fashion last week, earning him the role of 8-5 favorite. He will start from post three with Brian Sears. Trained by George Teague Jr., Mr Apples earned more than $250,000 as a 2-year-old, but missed the summer stakes season at three.
\"Last year, his blood work was off for a while,\" Teague said. \"He had a virus and he wasn\'t right physically. He\'s come along well late in the year. He\'s a versatile horse, game and his attitude is great. He loves his work. He dug in when he needed to [last week]. I wasn\'t really surprised. It helped that he got some work in at Dover in the top class
there. This is a fresh 4-year-old, just 20 starts lifetime. Sometimes a horse who shows promise at two doesn\'t get to fulfill it until he\'s four. This is one of those examples.\"
The weekend wraps up with the $72,100 Senior Trendsetter for conditioned pacers on Sunday afternoon. Yankee Galaxy and Free de Vie are in position to sweep the series after back-to-back wins in preliminary action. Free de Vie received the slight nod as the 2-1 morning line favorite from post six. Post time for the matinee card is 1:10 p.m.
