Shelliscape, making her first start for new connections, scored a 1:51.2 victory in the $81,000 Allerage farms Filly & Mare Open Pace Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile. The race was contested under a driving rain that turned the track sloppy. The $76,000 Allerage final for older mare trotters went to Maven in 1:52.3.
In the Mares Pace, driver Tim Tetrick rallied Shelliscape from behind for the victory, outclosing Camille and Matt Kakaley, with Rocklamation and Yannick Gingras, who won last week's Allerage elim, finishing third.
Now four, Shelliscape won a division of the Bluegrass last year at The Red Mile. Racing in the Bob McIntosh Stable, Shelliscape was purchased by Bamond Racing and sent to trainer Nifty Norman following her fourth-place finis in the $275,480 Milton final on Sept. 21 at Mohawk. Norman qualified Shelliscape at Freehold on Sept. 26 with the addition of Lasix; she easily won the non-bettor in 1:54.2.
A daughter of Artiscape, Shelliscape notched her third win of the year in 14 starts and 11th in 45 career attempts, bringing her earnings to $706,941.
Driver Gingras moved Maven first-over from third in the final turn of the Mares Trot, and despite drifting out slightly down the stretch, edged tempo-setting Check Me Out and driver Tim Tetrick in the final strides. Bax Of Life and John Campbell finished third.
A 4-year-old daughter of Glidemaster, Maven won for the eighth time in 11 starts this year, bringing her seasonal earnings to $327,720 and career total to $1,242,469. Trained by Jonas Czernyson, Maven is owned by William J. Donovan.
