Rebounding from two sub-par efforts, Sir Caviar captured Monday’s $22,500 Preferred Trot in the track-record time of 1:53.1. It was the fastest mile ever by an older gelding at The Meadows, knocking a tick from the old mark Sir Caviar held jointly with Master Begonia.

Sir Caviar dominated the Preferred Trot for much of the spring, winning three straight by a combined 11 lengths. But he broke stride in a $60,000 Open at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs and tired late in his return start at The Meadows.

Monday, the 5-year-old SJ’s Caviar-Sierra Flower K gelding flashed his best form for Brian Zendt, reeling off his front-end score in 27.4/56.3/1:24.4/1:53.1. Although Rembrandt Spur enjoyed a pocket trip, he lost ground late and finished 4 lengths back in second. Michaelrowyourboat rallied for show.

Leslie Zendt trains Sir Caviar, who now boasts $240,991 in career earnings, and owns with Bill Zendt.
