George Leager's Slick Tony ($4, Tony Morgan) notched his 39th career win Monday at Harrington Raceway with a 1:51.2 win in the featured $18,000 Open Pace.
Slick Tony, the even-money favorite, assumed control early from post two and marched through fractions of 27.2, 57 and 1:24.3 while Jacks Legend N mounted a first-over attack. The latter drew within a length at the top of the stretch but Slick Tony dug in gamely to hold him off and prevail in 1:51.2. Jacks Legend N was second with Rollwithpapajoe third. It was the second straight win for Slick Tony, who has banked over $700,000 in his career. Owned and trained by his breeder Leager, "Tony" has recorded five wins this year.
The night started out very chalky, in addition to the feature, favorites prevailed in the first three races as Random Hanover ($3, Russell Foster), Monty's Play ($3, Jason Lynch) and Scuola Hanover ($3.40, Art Stafford Jr.) all lived up to their backing from the betting public. Foster had three wins on the card.
Also on the undercard, in the $13,500 sub-featured pace for mares, Apple Bottom Jeans ($4, Corey Callahan) was a 1:52.3 winner. Trained by Dylan Davis for owners Howard Taylor, Robert Cooper Stables, and Ed Gold, the Mr. Apples mare is approaching $1 million in career earnings. (Harrington)
