Speed was the word at Monticello Raceway Tuesday afternoon as the upstate New York track set an all-time record with an average time for the 12 races - all of which were clocked in 1:58.4 or better - of 1:56.4.

Former Michigan-based horseman Larry Stalbaum, who arrived at the Mighty M last year, took speed badge honors for the afternoon when he guided Shadows Best Buddy to a 1:55 triumph in the $10,800 Open Pace. Stalbaum, along with peer Stephane Bouchard, won five races on the card. Greg Merton and Bruce Aldrich Jr. were the other two drivers who managed to find their way to the winner's circle.

Overall, the card was filled with short-priced winners. Seven favorites and five second choices made up the dozen winners, with an $8.30 mutuel on the program's opener being the highest win payoff.
