Spin Rate took the $40,000 Standardbred Retirement Foundation Open Pace for three-year-olds on Saturday, June 21. Ron Pierce drove the Allamerican Ingot colt to a new lifetime mark of 1:50.2.
Trained by Kelly O’Donnell, Spin Rate got away sixth and was third over going to a :54.2 half. With Dragon Master and driver Andy Miller setting the fractions, and horses stacked, Spin Rate went three wide around the last turn to take the lead at the top of the stretch. The colt never looked back and handily won the race by five lengths, posting a :27.3 last quarter.
David Miller steered Future Character, also parked the entire mile, to a second place finish with Foiled Again and George Brennan picking up third. Spin Rate, the race favorite, paid $4.00, $3.20 and $3.00.
Owned by Joseph Petrera and Robert Pucila, the colt now has six wins from 14 starts in 2007, including a win in the Matts Scooter Series Final on May 30.
