North America Cup winner Sportswriter is expected to arrive in New Jersey on Monday, July 5, in preparation for next weekend’s Meadowlands Pace eliminations. The 2-year-old divisional champion struggled with quarter cracks and bruised heels in his first few starts of the season, but trainer Casie Coleman reports the colt is in peak condition after his 1:48.3 victory in the North America Cup on June 26.
"Sportswriter came out of the race sound for the first time all year,” Coleman noted. “He's going to be in New Jersey next Monday. He's never left Canada, but he ships fine, so I don't see any problem with that. Mark MacDonald will drive him in the Pace."
Sportswriter bids to become the ninth North America Cup winner to capture the $1 million Meadowlands Pace, while Coleman aims to be the first woman to harness a winner in the track’s signature event. The Saturday, July 10, eliminations will determine the 10 finalists to compete in Meadowlands Pace Final on Saturday, July 17. Coleman will be the featured guest In The Sulky on Meadowlands Racetrack’s July 8 pre-card broadcast. (Meadowlands)
