Jerseylicious and driver Corey Callahan wore down heavy favorite Nikki Beach and Brian Sears in the stretch to win the $268,300 Sweetheart final for freshman filly pacers Saturday afternoon in 1:52.1. Cult Status and Trace Tetrick were third in a scratch-shortened contest that saw seven fillies line up behind the gate.

The Western Ideal lass broke her maiden in fine fashion on the Hambletonian Day card. The two year old raced off the pace early as UF Dragon’s Queen and Andy Miller led the field through a :26.4 opening panel. Racing up the backside, John Campbell moved Odds On Alpha from fourth, taking command and reaching the half in :54.2. Favored Nikki Beach and Sears, shuffled to fourth, pulled and began the challenge on the outside, bringing Jerseylicious with them. Second over at three-quarters (1:23.2), Callahan and Jerseylicious used the cover to perfection, passing the favorite in the lane en route to victory.

Finishing second by a nose and neck in two of her last three starts, Jerseylicious broke through for her first win at odds of 9-1. Trained by Wayne Givens, the filly is owned by Legacy Racing of De Inc. and Pamela Curran.

Acquavella and Banner Beach Day were scratched from the final earlier on the program. Undefeated Shebestingin, considered a top contender in the event, was a late scratch.
