Sweet Lou and Ron Pierce took command of the $257,700 US Pacing Championship on the way to the half Saturday at the Meadowlands and never looked back. The favorite won his eighth in a row handily with a 1:47.2 effort, his fifth consecutive score under 1:48. State Treasurer followed in second, with Thinking Out Loud third.

Drawing post seven, Sweet Lou was unhurried off the gate as Bettor’s Edge and Golden Receiver held down the first two positions through a :25.4 opening panel. State Treasurer and David Miller were the first to move, bringing Sweet Lou with them. The favorite reached the pylons just before the half (:53.1), shuffling State Treasurer to second. Once on the lead, the son of Yankee Cruiser was unchallenged for Pierce, winning with little urging from the driver.

A winner in eight of 11 starts this season for trainer Ron Burke, Sweet Lou has added $791,500 to his already impressive bankroll, which now stands at $2.9 million. The stallion is owned by Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi, Larry Karr and Phillip Collura.
