At the Red Mile on Sunday afternoon, Tall Dark Stranger--fresh off a victory in the North America Cup-- navigated a very sloppy track and won by 2 1/4 lengths over Adios winner Catch The Fire in 1:49.2.
Rain throughout the night turned the Red Mile's clay surface into a less than ideal surface, and combined with the cooler temperature, the clocking turned in by Tall Dark Stranger was impressive. Roll With JR took the early lead over the seven-horse field but Captain Kirk broke the beam at the quarter-mile marker (:26.2). The pace remained quick up the backstretch and Dexter Dunn sent Tall Dark Stranger up to challenge, still parked as the half-mile mark was reached in :53.4 (:27.2).
Tall Dark Stranger took the lead and opened up on the field, hitting the three-quarter mile station in 1:22 before opening up to a three-length lead at the stretch call. Mike Wilder ralled Catch The Fire from a 7 1/2-length deficit at the three-quarter mark to take second, but he was no threat to Tall Dark Stranger.
Nancy Takter trains Tall Dark Stranger for owners Marvin Katz, Howard Taylor, Crawford Farms Racing and Caviart Farms.
With the victory, Tall Dark Stranger earned a berth in the $300,000 Kentucky Sires Stakes final on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Red Mile.
