Tarver Hanover, who typically races at or near the front, showed versatility and heart Monday at The Meadows, when he came first-over to capture the $25,000 Preferred Pace.

When Tarver Hanover got away fourth, Tony Hall toyed with the idea of a quarter-pole move, but ducked back to the pylons when Hennessy Hanover and Dave Palone got the jump--and the lead. Tarver Hanover moved decisively down the backside, hooking Hennessy Hanover and holding off a fast-closing Vesuvio Grande by one-half length, in 1:52. Marty’s Charm was third.

Bill Daumit trains the 7-year-old son of Ball And Chain-Tarport Herald for The Wiz Kids Stable. Tarver Hanover has won 34 races and $559,515 in his career.

Palone won seven races on the day and Hall five; combined, they accounted for 80 percent of the victories on the 15-race card. (The Meadows)
