The Ice Dutchess crowned in James Doherty

The team of Jimmy and Johnny Takter connected for their second win on the Hambletonian Day card, capturing the $357,450 James Doherty Memorial for freshman trotting fillies with The Ice Dutchess Saturday, August 4 at the Meadowlands. The Muscle Hill-The Ice Queen filly trotted to a 1:53.4 victory. Favored Beautiful Sin raced second and Hanna Dreamgirl was third.
Lining up fifth in the field of 10, Johnny Takter placed The Ice Dutchess in the pocket seat as Hanovers Best and Brett Miller fired from post nine to take the early advantage. The Ice Dutchess was on the move to the lead shortly after the :28 first panel, but was soon shuffled after Yannick Gingras pushed Beautiful Sin, one of Jimmy Takter’s other entries, to the top at the half (:56.4).
In the stretch, Beautiful Sin drifted away from the pylons and provided The Ice Dutchess the room she needed. The filly brushed past the leader and trotted on to her second win in three starts. Bred by Stephen Day and David Reid, The Ice Dutchess is owned by Coyote Wynd Farms of Vancouver, British Columbia. The winning time shaved three full seconds off the filly’s previous best. Her earnings are now $198,725. The Ice Dutchess paid $12.80, $4.80 and $3.40.
Earlier in the program the Takter tandem won scored a victory with Basquiat in the $30,000 Frank Zanzuccki. The Hall of Fame trainer already has three wins on the program through five races.
