Peter Haughton Memorial winner Tom Ridge qualified at The Red Mile Friday morning in 1:57.2 with a last quarter in :27.1.

Trainer Jimmy Takter was behind the Malabar Man colt who sat third to the 1:00.1 half then swooped to the lead on the turn and drew off from the rest of the field down the stretch.

Takter said that since winning the Haughton he has trained the colt twice. "I trained him a mile in 2:07, here and a slower mile before that," Takter said.

The next start for Tom Ridge most likely will be in Canada. Takter has the Champlain, Sept. 1, and the Campbellville eliminations Sept. 8., as the possible next start. Both races are at Mohawk Raceway.

"A lot of people, you win the Peter Haughton you get scared. You want to back off. I don't want to back off too hard with him. I want to spread it out. He's sound. I had the veterinarian go over him. He's in very good physical shape."
