Western Joe and Scott Zeron were the fastest to the wire Saturday, August 4 in the $260,100 Sam McKee Memorial for free-for-all pacers, covering the 1 1/8 miles in a time of 2:02. The four-year-old son of Western Ideal-Ante Fay has become comfortable at the Meadowlands, picking up eight of his nine seasonal wins at the New Jersey oval. He finished ahead of McWicked while early leader Filibuster Hanover raced third.
Yannick Gingras left from post seven with Filibuster Hanover at the start and Western Joe followed to grab the pocket seat through a :26.1 opening quarter. Matt Kakaley would brush to the lead with All Bets Off and then battle Miso Fast and Tim Tetrick on the front through fractions of :54.4 and 1:21. Shuffled to third along the inside, Zeron looked for racing room, and when a window opened, he angled Western Joe out and paced by the hard-charging McWicked late in the lane.
Trained by Chris Choate for breeder Anthony Ruggeri and co-owner Richard Tosies, Western Joe added $130,050 to his bankroll with the win. His career earnings now stand at $462,655. He returned $7.60, $3.00 and $2.80 with the win.
