Jimmy Whittemore drove four winners during Friday night\'s nine-race card at Vernon Downs, including My Girl Lora in the weekly feature for female pacers.
Facing seven speedy distaffers in Friday\'s eighth event, My Girl Lora advanced from fourth at the quarter into the lead before the half, reached in :57.3. Whittemore kept the 5-year-old mare on the bit throughout the remainder of the mile, defeating the early leader, She Don\'t Know, by 3 1/4 lengths.
The win was the second in four starts for the career-winner of $67,000-plus, who is owned by trainer Dennis Whittemore (Jimmy\'s father).
Jimmy Whittemore presently leads all drivers in first-place finishes with 17.
In becoming the initial Vernon reinsman to post more than three victories on a single program at the nine-night-old meet, Whittemore also won with the pacers Noah\'s Art, Newberry Winner and trotter Wicked Winner.
Noah\'s Art\'s 1:56.1 triumph for owner-trainer Lonny Hale in Friday\'s second race was his third in a row, tying the veteran claimer with fellow pacer Basilio Blue Chip and the trotter Walden for most wins and consecutive tallies at the meet.
Chuck Connor, Jr. piloted two first-place finishers during the evening, while Dennis Whittemore and Hale were each credited with training doubles. (Vernon Downs)
