Yonkers Raceway began its 2020 season Monday night (Jan. 6), with Jim Marohn Jr. throwing down an early gauntlet.
Marohn Jr., whose 177 wins placed him sixth locally a season ago, won four races during Yonkers’ dozen-race opener.
He and 29-1 outlier Sugar Shock ($60.50) busted any number of Pick 5 tickets, upsetting in the first leg of that sequence in 1:53.4, a tick off his life-best effort.
Whomever was left standing after that race then had to unearth 28-1 shot Sir Machalot (Cory Stratton, $59) in the next race.
For some good measure, 18-1 Milliondollar Wave (Austin Siegelman, $39.20) won the final leg.
It wasn’t surprising that the sequence went unclaimed, meaning Tuesday evening’s (Jan. 7) gimmick starts with $4,751.30 carryover and a $15,000 guaranteed pool. The guarantee has been approved by the New York State Gaming Commission and is in conjunction with the U.S. Trotting Association’s Strategic Wagering Program. (Yonkers)
